Welcome to the September newsletter from Peak Physical Therapy.

Summer seemed to fly by! Kids will be back in school and schedules get filled in with sports, music, meetings. Make sure you look after yourself- maybe schedule in an exercise session, or even just go for a walk before the weather gets cold. Our newsletter this month talks about a couple of really common problems: rotator cuff tears and whiplash injuries. If you or someone you know is struggling with either of these, we can help!


Understanding Rotator cuff Tears 

Rotator cuff tears are a common injury to the shoulder joint, resulting in pain, weakness, and loss of function of the arm. 80% of individuals with a rotator cuff tear respond positively to non-surgical treatment options, including physiotherapy. Whether or not you undergo surgery, physiotherapy is essential in order to properly rehabilitate the shoulder after injury to the rotator cuff.

While swimming is often thought of as a low-risk sport, there is still a risk of injury from the repetitive movement involved, especially shoulder injury. A physiotherapist can prepare your body, and help minimize your risk of injury, by teaching you stretching exercises to do before jumping in the pool for your next swim.

Whiplash refers to a sudden backward and forward movement of the neck that most commonly occurs from rear or side-impact collisions, leading to symptoms such as neck pain that radiates into the arm, headaches, dizziness, and even low back pain.
